good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on this sunday, december 31. let's start with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. there is a system pushing into our big dome of high pressure. it will weaken, though, so right now we're looking at half a mile visibility in napa. the colder temperatures from novato to santa rosa this morning. 53 fremont. we are warmer this morning because of the cloud cover, but

there is a cooler air mass offshore with plenty of cloudy skies, and with that we're still looking dry the next several days. i'll time out when we'll see some rain which will be for a couple days next week. carolyn? >> thank you, lisa. redwood city police are investigating a shooting that's left one person dead. officers say a woman was on her way to a wells fargo atm yesterday afternoon when she noticed a man pacing with a gun. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson shows us witness video of the tense police standoff. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows what happened next. officers quickly circled the suspect and started talking to him. >> he was not complying at all. >> reporter: interim police chief jared kirby said the 32-year-old man was noncompliant and known to officers. >> they've known him since he was eight years old. >> reporter: they asked the suspect to drop his gun

repeatedly. it captures nearly seven minutes of negotiations that ended when the suspect shot his weapon. you can see the suspect raise his arms and fire. >> he fired his gun i don't know how many times, but he fired his gun in the direction of officers. >> reporter: officers then returned fire. >> they shot the dude. >> reporter: none of the officers was injured. the suspect was killed. jimenez is a soldier. he expects gunfire on the front lines, not near his front yard. >> i didn't expect there to be a shooting. i thought the guy was going to comply, they would arrest him and that was going to be that. it escalated very quickly. >> reporter: chief kirby says the suspect has criminal past. the woman calling 911 may have kept him from robbing someone at the atm.

police are investigating the shooting. in redwood city, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. a surfer was bitten on the foot by a shark yesterday near the mouth of the estero in marin county. the national park service has now closed the area to surfers and swimmers. a good samaritan helped the victim who is recovering from the attack. it's goodbye to a fallen chp officer at a memorial service in stockton. officer andrew camaleri lost his life christmas eve when a suspected impaired driver hit his car in hayward. ♪ >> reporter: music and memories filled the christian life center in stockton where hundreds of law enforcement officers, some as far away as colorado and

texas came to honor fallen chp officer andrew camaleri, a man who loved his job. >> whether it was to help a disabled motorist, issue a citation to a speeding driver, which andrew just enjoyed because he got to drive past. >> reporter: he died in the line of duty christmas eve in hayward when his patrol car was struck by a suspected drunk driver, who was later arrested. >> he was out there trying to protect others from vet thithe thing that took his life. >> reporter: his friend's emotional tribute brought everyone to tears. >> andrew, i know you can hear me. i love you, brother. it was an honor being your partner. love you, brother. >> andrew was a family man and

liked nothing more than being with his wife roxie and their children. >> reporter: the couple have three young children. >> andrew, i know you miss your dad and he's not here, but he'll always watch over you. >> reporter: warren stanley presented roxie camaleri with her husband's badge. officer camaleri now returns to his hometown of tracy where he will be laid to rest. six people were hurt in a violent collision between two cars near san francisco's golden gate park. the crash happened at arguello boulevard and fulton street. a mercedes t-boned an accurate at full speed. the acura had a family of four

in it including two children. >> he smashed directly into the other car at full speed. >> the fire department says all six hurt in the crash were taken to the hospital with injuries considered to be non-life-threatening. the driver of the mercedes were briefly detained by police after the crash before being taken to the hospital. here is a live look right now over the embarcadero in san francisco. tonight the city is going to be packed with revelers ready to count down to the new year. but there's still a lot to do to prepare. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington has the details. >> reporter: barriers are stacked along san francisco's embarcadero ready for sunday when they'll line the streets to help control the tens of thousands of people expected to help ring in the new year and watch the fireworks over the bay. there will be tight security and

heavy police presence. >> if you see something, say something. >> reporter: at a press conference friday, police chief bill scott said visitors should feel safe here. >> there are no known credible threats to the city. however, we know any time there is a large event with a lot of people, we always have to supply additional police support, additional collaboration or better collaboration with all of our local, state and federal partners. >> reporter: bars and restaurants along waterfront are gearing up for a busy night. coquette is already booked with a special new year's eve menu. the fire department is reminding people how dangerous it is to set off illegal fireworks and they're urging people to report any that you see. the city set up safety alerts. if there is any, they will be pushed out by text alerts.

you can get those texts. >> more about the final preparations in san francisco for tonight's fireworks display. it tals a team 48 hours to get the pyrotechnics ready. they'll be launched from a barge 150 feet offshore on the embarcadero. there is a concern that the 15-minute fireworks show will worsen the already poor air quality. >> particles from these exploding fireworks linger in the air for quite some time. especially with the conditions we have right now, calm conditions, cool temperatures, that means air pollution is just lingering in the air. >> a winter spare the air alert is in effect for today. hundreds of thousands of spectators typically take in the san francisco fireworks show. many bay area transit agencies are providing free rides tonight.

caltrain, sam trans, vta and muni all offering free rides. they'll run from 8:00 tonight and run into the early morning. bart will run extra trains until 3:00 tomorrow morning. bart says trains will run every 20 minutes after midnight, but here's a reminder, some stations will be skipped due to overcrowding, so people are asked to plan ahead. celebrate 2018 with abc 7 and dick clark's new year's rocking eve with ryan join us for abc news at 11:00 and at 11:30, the countdown until midnight as new year's ro rockin' eve continues.

was so much more. he was like a son to you? >> he was my son. he treated me as his father. >> reporter: from a young age, family members say ryan harris a spid aspired to be a u.s. marine with the ultimate goal of becoming a highway patrol officer. >> all-american kid. he enjoyed life, he really did, and he was an example for how to live life. >> reporter: it was just a week ago he was on leave and at home opening christmas presents. now that dream lost forever. his family explains what they understand to have happened at a bar in san diego. >> there was a fight going on and he went to intervene and stop the fight, and in the process he was stabbed and killed. >> reporter: he was trying to do the right thing. >> he always tried to do the right thing. >> reporter: to whoever did this to him, would you have anything to say?

>> i would. >> reporter: what would that be? >> i would say to them, you've taken one of the most precious things from our lives and we'd like to know why. >> reporter: the family is working to set up funeral arrangements. meanwhile they're anxiously awaiting any new information about what happened in san diego. in elverat, abc 7 news. family members and community members gathered in mayor ed lee's hometown for a celebration of life. a large crowd came together to pay tribute to lee at seattle's franklin high school. lee was born and raised in seattle at franklin high. he was class president for the first of what would be many leadership roles in his life. >> he left a legacy, sure. the impact of him being a mayor was just more than any of us could have imagined, being in seattle, and we're just extremely proud and we'll miss

him, but we know that his accomplishments live on. >> childhood friends remembered him as a low-key and open-hearted man whose rising government broke barriers particularly for asian americans. it is expected to be the coldest new year's eve in decades for many cities. new york city health officials say the temperature in times square tonight will be around 11 degrees with a wind chill that will feel like zero. erie, pennsylvania already digging out from the five and a half feet of snow from last week is expecting 18 more inches. chicago, it's frozen, and with a high today of s6 degrees, officials are concerned for the homeless. >> people's lives are at stake, so we're checking up on them. we want to make sure they're getting the resources they need to be safe. >> and a common sense warning from officials in frozen cities

across the country. stay inside if you can or be prepared for those bone-chilling conditions. whoa, whoa, right in front of us, down in the ditch! whoa, whoa, there's another one, oh, another one going in! >> oh, my, a crash involving more than 40 cars closed a stretch of highway for several hours. this was in whitehall, michigan northwest of grand rapids. police say three people were hurt, fortunately, no one seriously. one driver who was stuck in a ditch took video of the incident. speed was a factor in this chain reaction crash that happened in near zero visibility. new minimum wage loss goes into effect. smaller businesses must pay

10.50 an hour. larger businesses must pay $11.50 an hour. san jose, san mateo, loss altoso cupertino will raise the minimum wage to $13.50. sunnyvale and mountain view, $15, this evening is goodwill's donate-a-thon. this is video from a previous event. you can drop off donations between 7:00 this morning and 5:00 tonight. besides a tax deduction, donors get free movie tickets. good sunday morning,

everyone. a lot of cloud cover here on live doppler 7. in fact, we're looking at just a few returns. moisture is offshore but the atmosphere is so dry we're not going to see any rain aside from maybe a sprinkle or two. but we're also going to see a whole lot more cloud cover. the air mass will be cooler and fog is in the north bay to santa rosa and napa. we're looking at the peninsula at san carlos airport. we talked about the air quality being poor. it is the 16th winter spare the air alert with the north bay and the coast and inland and east bay looking at poor air quality, moderate quality elsewhere. we'll get that better air quality tomorrow, the first day of the new year. 49 in san francisco with 50 in fremont. we are looking at some cool numbers once again, but as we go through our hour by hour forecast, you'll notice the

cloud cover. 7:00 this morning and into the afternoon. mostly sunny skies and a few peeks here and there. by 4:00 in the afternoon you can see a few holes in the we should have over 4 inches of rain for the month and we've had just under .15". we're looking at cloud cover tonight. fireworks should be fine. we're talking noontime temperatures today in the mid to upper 50s with hazy skies. sunset 5:00. low 60s inland, then by 8:00 dropping to 40s inland. then by midnight jackets will be needed with mid and upper 40s for most of you, but right around the bay about 50 degrees. we'll bring in our storm impact scale for wednesday into thursday. it's a 1, and we're looking at

light rain amounts anywhere from .1 to it looks like we get more rain friday morning right to friday night. so the preliminaries are wednesday into thursday, and we'll add to those totals on friday. the cloud, the haze, spare the air alert. 52 in concord, 59 on the peninsula, 58 in san francisco. this is toward dawn tomorrow, we'll get the fog in the valleys, but overall for the fireworks we'll just have cloudy skies. 30s and 40s. the accuweather 7-day forecast. partly sunny, a lot of cloud cover around. 50s to 60s for new year's day. a little warmer and brighter. by tuesday still keeping 60s around and that cloud cover.

the clouds will stay with us late tonight. it shouldn't obscure the fireworks from lower altitudes but we are looking for a change in the weather pattern with rain coming our way next week. carolyn? >> lisa, thank you. in politics he was the name many people had heard before. now papadopoulos is in the center of an investigation. there is a report on how the former trump aide first landed on his radar. >> reporter: new reporting on how u.s. authorities may have first learned about russia's attempts to meddle in the 2016 election reportedly because of what a former trump campaign adviser told an australian diplomat at this london wine bar in may of 2016. according to the "new york times," trump adviser george papadopoulos boasted to alexandra downer that russia had

political dirt on hillary clinton. the australians eventually passed that tip on to u.s. authorities. according to the paper that was reportedly two months later, about the time that hacked dnc e-mails started appearing on line. papadopoulos, who recently pled guilty to lying to the fbi, was part of the trump campaign's national security and foreign policy team seen here at a meeting with candidate trump. the president posted a picture of that meeting at the time, but later disavowed it. >> i don't remember much about that meeting. it was an unimportant meeting. >> reporter: as for papadopoulos, few people knew the low-level volunteer named george who has already proven to be a liar. papadopoulos' fiancee told abc that all his work was coordinated with top levels of the campaign.

the president's lawyer declined to comment to abc news about the "times" story of his special counsel. >> it is apparently very significant because it would mean back in july of 2016 the fbi would have launched its investigation not as a result of the so-called dodgey dossier compiled by a former british spy from russian sources and paid for by the democrats but rather, because of incredible intelligence from a trusted foreign ally. david wright, abc news, west palm beach. as the year comes to a close, mike mullen discusses the global challenges facing president trump in the coming year. you can watch the full interview on "this week with george stephanopolo stephanopolous" right here on abc 7. a prank caller who reported

a fake crime caused police to swarm a home on friday night. it's called swatting, and in this case the prank cost an innocent man his life. abc news reporter ariel rushup has the details. >> reporter: an innocent man gunned down by an officer in wichita, all part of what authorities are calling a deadly case of swatting. officer-involved shooting is a tragic and senseless act. >> reporter: 25-year-old tyler barris arrested in california believed by police to be the cryptic voice in this bogus 911 call. >> i shot him in the head and he's not breathing anymore. >> reporter: barris allegedly saying he shot his father and then describing a sinister plan. >> i poured gasoline all over the house. i might just set it on fire. >> reporter: police rushed to where the caller was. when they arrived, he was standing at the screen door, body cameras rolling as officers

commanded finch to raise his arms. at first he complies, but then police say he dropped his hands. >> he pulled a weapon from his waistband, shot one round, striking the male. >> i want answers. i want answers. >> reporter: now wichita police and the fbi investigating whether the fateful prank call was made after a fight with on-line gamers that authorities say may have had nothing to do with finch. new york city police are getting ready for the more than 1 million revelers expected to celebrate the new year in times square. the nypd said 22 city blocks will be blocked off, the largest new year's eve closure ever. for the first time police will stream guests and hotels. they'll be in the streets and even in the air.

authorities say there is no credible threat. police want everyone to have a good time but of course stay vigilant. firefighters are making great progress on the thomas fire in southern california, but it will still take three more weeks to get full containment. this morning we're told it's at 92%. the fires burned more than 280,000 acres and destroyed more than a thousand structures. because of the progress, firefighters are spending less time on the fire line and more time repairing damage they caused trying to contain the blaze. they do remain on alert. there is a risk flames could flare up again because of high temperatures and low humidity. now to a scam that could put a real damper on your holiday season. if you gave or received a gift card, there is a chance you've been ripped off. abc news reporter adrian bankard explains. >> reporter: if you purchased gift cards as presents this year, there could be a grinch draining them. >> i was shocked.

>> reporter: just two days after josh leighton bought this walmart gift card for his mom, a thief was apparently using the card's number. >> this gift card had been used three different times. >> reporter: leighton checked the balance which plainly showed those charges. what's left? just 47 cents. >> it never left my wallet. >> reporter: police say crooks lift the info off unused cards that are out in the open and then wait until someone buys them. >> if the bad guys know those card numbers, they can keep checking them and seeing if someone has activated them and then they can loot them. >> reporter: leighton says he reached out to walmart but didn't get his money back. walmart says they have protocols in place to help from criminal behavior. they said buy cards behind the counter. or buy online direct from retailer. it is the end of the year,

alert today and even some rain in our future. as you look to the east bay hills camera, the fog doesn't look too bad there. the highlights call for cold spots tonight, the coldest ones in the 30s. we'll see a mix of stars and clouds tonight and we're looking for the showers to return on wednesday into thursday, and it looks like we can extend it into the first portion of the weekend. and right now, temperatures outside are certainly cold. we've had this routine for the past month or so where the atmosphere is not well mixed, and because of that not a lot of wind, and if you have asthma, boy, it's been rough out there, but we are looking at more clouds today. notice there is some green offshore. we could see a few sprinkles. this is a weak system bumping into this current ridge of high pressure. it's really not going anywhere. and we'll continue to see the cloud cover stream in today. mild visibility.

it is 44 degrees in mountain view. good morning to you. 44 in vallejo. fairfield, 35 degrees. your hour by hour forecast today calls for more of that high cloud cover. mid-level clouds, maybe even a sprinkle or two, but that should be about it. we take you to 4:30 in the afternoon. some breaks or holes in the cloud deck. we'll get a little bit of sunshine, but boy, it's dry. in a review for december, had scant amounts. .03" in livermore. we remain dry today for new year's eve. hazy skies right through the afternoon. the sun sets at 5:00, maybe a couple low 60s inland, then we'll see the numbers drop in

the 50s inland by about 8:00. still staying mild with that cloud cover. then by midnight we've got 40s in the inland valleys, 50 at the bay and at the coast. the storm impact scale is a 1. wednesday to thursday anywhere from a tenth to a half inch. then by wednesday night we are covered in some light to moderate rain. here comes a little bit more on thursday. a bit of a break in the afternoon and then the next wave of more significant rain looks to come in on friday. it certainly is an improvement. temperatures will stay mild. if you're headed to the mountains, you could see a little rain up there, and if you get high enough, a rain-snow mix. today 62 in concord, 61 in san jose. partly sunny conditions. 57 on the coast. and your accuweather 7-day forecast, we're featuring more clouds, mild temperatures each
